The Be Still Project, Inc. connects those struggling with mental health and substance use issues to positive-impact activities such as art, fitness, nature, and more, as well as resources that will improve their quality of life.
We fight to break the stigma of mental health and substance use issues through discussion, outreach, and education, empowering those who struggle and memorializing those who lost the battle.
WHY WE STARTED
The Be Still Project was established in December 2019, by a family who was left devastated in the wake of mental health and substance use’s “worst case scenario”.
Brett Michael “TJ” Tjaden passed away on November 6, 2019 at the age of 23. He was so many beautiful things; a son, an amazing brother, a loving uncle, a grandson, a lover of music, a smile that could turn your day around. TJ was incredible. Unfortunately, like so many of us, TJ struggled with depression and anxiety, fueling his struggle with drug use.
Losing TJ has changed everything about our lives, and the grief we feel in our hearts without him here has transformed into motivation to help others just like him.
From that motivation, grew The Be Still Project, Incorporated.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO “BE STILL”
“Be Still” was inspired by a song by one of TJ’s favorite bands. Tattooed on his arm with a matching tattoo on his sister’s, these words were a reminder between the two of them that even in your darkest moments, you are not alone.
After losing TJ, the meaning has transformed into something much bigger for both his friends and family. Now when we hear “be still”, we think of what we all wished for TJ – a quiet mind, an at-peace soul, and the ability to calm anxiety by being in the moment.
Although stillness is not permanent and anxiousness comes in waves, The Be Still Project was inspired by the fact that it is possible to “be still”, even when it feels impossible.

HELP ME FIND
Our vision is a world where openly discussing your mental health, on the good and bad days, is the norm. Where having a therapist is as normal as having a pediatrician and the resources are accessible to everyone.
We live in a difficult world but we live in it together. We envision you believing this: You are not alone and we can figure this out together.
From beginning to end, it is our objective to do the legwork so that you can focus on your healing.
Nobody needs to feel more alone, more lost, or more hopeless than they truly are. Everyone has the potential to lead a happy, healthy life - sometimes, it takes a helping hand to get there. We're here to be that helping hand.
On November 6th, 2019, the world lost the most amazing soul to the worst case scenario of mental health and substance use issues gone untreated.
The grief we feel in our hearts without him here has transformed into motivation to help others just like him by acknowledging the difficulties in the system and tackling them head-on.
